Cannizzaro Reaction

Reaction :-

The Cannizzaro reaction involves the treatment of an aldehyde (without an alpha hydrogen) with concentrated NaOH or KOH. The aldehyde undergoes an Oxidation-Reduction For example, When benzaldehyde is heated with concentrated NaOH, a mixture of benzyl alcohol and sodium benzoate is formed.

Mechanism :-

Step1 :- Attack of OH on the carbonyl carbon

Step2 :- Hydride ion transfer

Step3 :- Acid-base reaction
