Reaction :-

The different aldehydes, each lacking alpha hydrogen, engage in a crossed cannizzaro reaction when heated in an alkaline solution. For example, when benzaldehyde is heated with formaldehyde in the presence of NaOH a mixture of benzyl alcohol and sodium formate is formed.
