Reaction :-

This involves the treatment of an aldehyde or ketone with alpha bromo ester in the presence of zinc. The  product (after acid hydrolysis) is a Î²-Hydroxy ester.

Mechanism :-

Step1 :- Formation of zinc salt of enol of the ester.

Step2 :- The zinc salts reacts with the carbonyl compounds.

Step3 :- Acid-hydrolysis gives Î²-Hydroxy ester
